Study Conference For Sixth Form Pupils
The fourth annual two-day conference for sixth form pupils in Christchurch has been arranged for November 19 and 20 by the schools committee of the Student Christian Movement. The conference theme is “Bridging the Gap,” and the accent will be on a study of the tensions between individuals, groups and nations and on some of the issues confronting New Zealanders. The theme will be introduced by a panel discussion led by the conference chairman, Mr C. L. Knight, of the Christchurch Teachers’ College. Mr W. J. A. Brittenden, principal of Aranui High School, will discuss family life. Mr R. G. Pilling (Lincoln College) will talk about international influences and the Rev. R. A. Lowe, vicar of Fendalton, will emphasise the responsibility of Christians. Much of the time will be spent in discussion when 25 groups, each of 10 members, will study questions arising from the addresses. A panel discussion at the end of the second day will bring together the ideas investigated by the groups.
The chairman of the organising committee is Miss B. Wall, senior lecturer in the secondary department of the Teachers’ College. A briefing of the study group leaders the day before the conference
will be given by Miss Wall and the registrar for the conference is Miss J. W. Runciman, of Hillmorton High School.
November 19 and 20 were chosen for the conference so that sixth formers who have been accredited for their university entrance, and some pupils in upper sixth forms could attend without prejudicing their examinations. The conference will be held in the Ngaio Marsh Theatre, and the enrolment of 250 will be allocated proportionately.
