Big Speedboat Regatta On December 1

Spectators enjoyed an afternoon of high-powered racing at Pleasant Point last Saturday, when members of the New Brighton Power Boat Club gave a thrilling display of high-speed boating, in preparation for their first Ng regatta at Lake Ellesmere, on December 1.

Cost-a-Lot, owned and driven by Bob Denson, reached speeds nearing 76 m.p.h., spraying water into the air 30ft behind him. The main duel of the day was between Arnold Johnson driving Atom XII, and John Stokes, in Juella. In three separate races, these boats raced neck and neck around

the course, crossing the finish line only inches apart.

Entries have been received from the South Island’s fastest speedboats, including the wbrid recordholder, rotor Knight, in BelAir.

Major events bn the programme include the South Island 180 cu. in hydro championships, and the first heat of the Rothmans outboard hydro championship.
