Two-Year-Old Judoka

Is he judo’s youngest participant? Judging by the enthusiasm with which he approaches the sport, two-year-old Glenn Bryson, of Christchurch, could be a black belt bolder in embryo. His parents, Mr and Mrs D. Bryson, are both holders

of the coveted black belt. It was while they were coaching at the Avonhead Judo Club that their small son dashed on to the mat, eager to take part in the activities. Now, after a few months, he can simulate the actions effectively in “bouts"

with his parents. Naturally, Mr and Mrs Bryson have to throw themselves in these encounters, but Glenn goes through the motions like a champion. He has his own uniform, which he wears with a great sense of pride, and can bow neatly and correctly. Neither parent has forced Glenn to participate in judo; in fact, he takes part only when he feels like it. And he does not have a great deal of time at his disposal in the club coaching sessions—-two-year-old sportsmen have a fairly early curfew to observe. The photograph shows Glenn having just “thrown" his father—and loving it. His mother is watching.
