Protection Sought In Take-overs

A trade union movement in Canterbury was seeking protection for workers in the event of redundancy through take-overs, said the president of the Canterbury Trades Council of the Federation of Labour (Mr R. A. Hill) yesterday.

The sharp realisation of the vulnerability of workers in increasing instances of takeovers was brought about by the take-over and sudden closure of T. Armstrong and Company, Ltd, this week, he said. Christchurch had seen an 88-year-old firm with 130 employees close overnight. The unions with members involved in the Armstrong’s take-over would ask the Canterbury Trades Council to ask the national executive of the F.O.L. to investigate job redundancy through take-overs. Because of the frequency of take-overs the united trade union movement needed to formulate some definite policy to protect workers’ interests. Unless some positive step was taken the workers could be .the hapless victims of takeovers, with shareholders gaining rich benefits, he said.

■ Mr Hill this week led a deputation from the Trades Hall that requested the management of Armstrong’s to make a settlement of one weeks pay for each year of service to its dismissed employees.
