Now 58 Play Centres In Canterbury
There are now 58 play centres in the Canterbury area, says the report of the Canterbury Play Centres Association.
Newly-established centres at Albury, Eiffleton, Glen-iti, Lower Cashmere and Mayfield are now running smoothly. Dunsandel and Harihari are in preparation while Governor’s Bay, formerly in recess, has re-opened, says the report “More centres are opening in the country than in the city areas although there are many children in the newer suburbs who will benefit from pre-school education. “Waikari and Leeston have bought permanent buildings and Glenmark now operate in their new building, formerly the school at Tonnore. Awatere, Cheviot Hororata and Methven are raising money for building, Pleasant Point and Mairebau have moved to more convient premises and Fendalton have their own room in the Community Centre. The movement has had some notable firsts during the year, according to the pre-
sident (Mrs Ailsa Densem), who will present the report. The association held its first long leadership course, its first graduation ceremony, and also advertised supervisors’ positions in the newspapers for the first time. Although the opportunity for joint seminars with the Kindergarten Association had nut arisen during the year, there are many areas of common interest
