STAFFING OF SCHOOLS
Assurance Wanted (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 4. There was widespread anxiety among members of the New Zealand Post Primary Teachers’ Association that progress towards overcoming the staffing crisis in schools should not stop with the recent Parliamentary announcement on the reduction of sixth-form class sizes, the president of the association (Mr C. B. Newenham) said in a statement tonight. The Department of Education and his association had prepared a programme for fixing maximum class sizes at 20 for sixth forms and 30 for other forms. He said the programme was now before the Cabinet, and the announcement to reduce sixth form class sizes was the first step in the programme. The fears of parents and teachers would not be allayed until they received an assurance from the Government that the programme would be implemented, Mr Newenham said.
Pensioners’ Cottages.—The Lyttelton Borough Council has made an application to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to raise $12,600 to build four singleunit pensioners’ cottages.
