Kight Hal Commander E. W. van Reeth, commander of the United States Navy VX6 Squadron, now has an obligation to wear the right hat when he pilots either of the squadron’s Super Constellations. He has been given baseball caps by each of the "Connie” crews to wear when he goes flying with them. The caps bear the Phoenix and Pegasus emblems of the two aircraft, which transport passengers and cargo between McMurdo Station and Christchurch. Christmas Bookings Bookings for overseas telephone calls required for the Christmas-New Year period will now be accepted by the international exchange. The Post Office asks that early applications be made for calls required in the more popular hours. To make the bookings applicants should get in touch with the nearest toil exchange and tell the operator that it is desired to arrange an overseas telephone call for Christmas or New Year. Road Closed Carrs Road, Loburn, will be closed to through traffic from Pound Road to Wallers Road, today, tomorrow, and Thursday to enable the Ashley County Council to widen a culvert to two lanes and replace the existing wooden deck with concrete slabs precast in the council yard. The work is part of a programme of preparing about two miles of the road for sealing this season. More Hepatitis Seven more hepatitis cases were reported in the Christchurch health district last week. They included an adult in the Waipara County, a man in his thirties and a child in the Chatham Islands, and four children in the city area.
C.0.R.5.0. Anniversary Special activities are being planned for next year to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of C.0.R.5.0. in New Zealand. The district organiser for the Canterbury and Westland area of C.0.R.5.0. (Mr R. H. French) said yesterday that it was hoped to arrange the production of a documentary film showing the work of the organisation at home and abroad during the last 25 years. A national gathering of all the affiliated bodies of C.0.R.5.0. probably i: Wellington, and visits by overseas persons were also proposed. Several projects among young people might be organised, he said. No Soil Survey Although a little field work had been done, there were no plans for a formal soil classification scheme in the area from the Waimakariri to Ashley Rivers, and inland to the Fernside area, said the principal scientific officer for the D.S.I.R.’s soil bureau in Christchurch (Mr J. Raeside) yesterday. No staff had been permanently assigned to such a project, he said.
Reefton Hike
About 70 young people recently raised $75 for C.0.R.5.0. during a hike from Cronadun to Reefton organised by the Reefton Youth Against Hunger committee. The distance is about seven miles.
Outdated
The beret will be part of the girls’ winter uniform only at the Hillmorton High School next year. The headmaster (Mr P. W. Murdoch) told the board of governors last night that the beret was becoming as outdated as the panama hat as part of the summer uniform. To remove the beret was merely to follow the lead given by other schools.
