Record Entries At Ellesmere, First Show Of The Season

Record entries—and quality condition and presentation in all classes in spite of the cold, backward spring—were particularly pleasing features of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show held at Leeston on Saturday. Judges said that it was a tribute to the district, and to the industry of the farming community, that exhibitors were able to overcome the effects of the late season.

Although a keen south-easterly breeze, and slightly clouded sky for most of the day, chilled the air, there was a general feeling of relief that the first show of the season had enjoyed fine weather, and that the programme could be run to schedule.

A very large crowd attended the show, the gate takings, at $B9O, being the second highest on record—only $7 down on last year.

The Leeston show is well known for its wide variety of stock, and once again its saddle-horse and Friesian cattle sections were particularly strong. Entries, at 2664, were 100 above the previous best of 1966. There were 338 more than last year. The judge of the saddle horses and hacks (Mr T. C. Grigg) said exhibitors had done extremely well with their horses considering the late season. Being the first show of the season, many had trouble with manners, but the standard of grooming and turn out—specially by the leading competitors—was excellent. The standard of the top competitors was as high as that shown in any metropolitan show. Champion Hack Argus Competition between the champion hack, Argus (Miss J. Richardson and I. Bell) and the reserve champion. Condor (Mrs B. Blackie and L Bell) was very close. “There was nothing between them,” Mr Grigg said. “Another day, and the result could swing the other way.” The judge of the trotting and harness horses (Mr J. D. Litten) expressed disappointment at the small entry in the trotting section. Entries were of excellent condition and manners, but it was unfortunate there were not more of them. Mr Litten said he was particularly pleased to see so many cobs shown in harness. It was many years since he had seen such a good display. The standard was excellent Ayrshire Cattle The judge of the Ayrshire cattle (Mr R. F. Pollock) said all entries were in good order and well presented, in spite of the cold and backward spring. Competition was very close in many sections, the champions all being good representatives of their breed.

Mr D. Squire, the judge of the Romney sheep, said the champion ram, bred and entered by Lincoln College, had an outstanding head, and even fleece. It was a wellbalanced sheep with a good back, and walked welt The reserve champion went to an outstanding carcase sheep entered by R. I. Mcßae in the older sheep class. The top ram hoggets were very good sheep, but the ewes were not a strong class. The ehampion ewe, however, had a wonderful fleece, gaining the ribbon from a team mate of Mr H. C. Vanstone. Fat Lambs

The judge of the fat lambs (Mr G. H. Steel) said the good selection and excellent presentation, in spite of the backward spring, said a lot for the district Notwithstanding the poor season, some pens tended to be slightly over-fat The final pens were in all cases difficult to choose between.

Mr B. B. Bryant the judge of the Large White and Landrace pigs, said competition was excellent and entries good. The top pigs were as good as any to be found in New Zealand. The champion and reserve were outstanding. The judge of the Berkshires and Tamworths (Mr H. P. Ashton) said the standard was quite good, but numbers were not strong. The porkers and baconers, however, were well up to standard. The champions were outstanding animals Championship results were: CHAMPIONSHIPS Sheep Border Leicester— Bam: Miss H. G.
