Fierce Tussle Likely In 10-Mile Race
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. The national 10-mile race championship, which will be held over the Auckland waterfront course on Saturday afternoon, promises to be a fierce tussle between J. L. Julian (Auckland), E. Gray (Canterbury) and W. D. Baillie (Auckland).
Julian first won the title, which he still holds, in 1966 at Invercargill with a time of 49min 17sec. Gray was a close second, in 49min 23sec. In 1967 Julian retained the title at Hamilton, in 47min 55sec, the fastest time for the distance run on either road or track in New Zealand.
Gray was not a starter and Baillie, a previous national champion, was third, in 48min 51sec. The first 20-mile road walk championship, which will be held in the morning, will feature the Northlander, N. I. Read, who gained the bronze medal for this distance in the last Commonwealth Games.
