Humphrey Support
(N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Oct. 6
The national board of the Americans for Democratic Action called on Liberals today to unite behind Mr Hubert Humphrey for President, the “New York Times” news service reported.
It was the first endorsement of the Humphrey-Muskie ticket by the Liberal organisation, which had vigorously supported Senator Eugene McCarthy for the Democratic Presidential nomination. The endorsement came on a vote on 71 to 16, after nearly seven hours of lively debate.
In its formal endorsement, the A.D.A. board called on Mr Humphrey to “separate himself from the Johnson-Rusk errors of the past” and applauded his move toward advocacy of halt in the bombing. But the group said it still was not satisfied with Mr Humphrey’s position on Vietnam. It wanted “a forthright call for an unconditional cessation of the bombing here and now.”
