Four-Day Week For Paparoa Miners
(New Zealand Press Association)
WESTPORT, October 4.
The Paparoa State coalmine near Greymouth will produce coal on a four-day-week basis from now on, the district manager of Grey mines (Mr J. Lundon) said today.
The 34 mine workers at Paparoa had been instructed to work a four, instead of a five-day week, because there was no demand for Roa coal, said Mr Lundon. Stockpiling had been going on for some time.
It was first thought that the closure of the Dobson mine would help create a market, but it had not, he said. Production had got ahead of demand early this year, when the Railways Department started reducing orders as more and more steam engines were replaced with diesel units. “Normally, the men will work the first four days of the week. However, this could be changed round to suit conditions. They’ve been told that they must have a
day off in any case,” Mr Lundon said. The men realised that they either had to work a four-day week or face retrenchment, he said.
