“Enough Cargo Available For Tasman Shipping”
If Lyttelton was made a terminal for direct calls by the new Tasman roll-on, rolloff ships, it was certain that Christchurch and Canterbury would be able to provide sufficient cargo to make the proposition payable, said Mr F. I. Sutton, at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber will partici-
pate at a special meeting to be held among interested parties on October 11. The vice-president (Mr R. C. Wallace) last evening said it was vital to Canterbury commerce and Industry that the roll-on ships call at Lyttelton. He said he was concerned at the present set-up in the South Island. The Hawea, on the Lyttelton-Auckland run, and the Maori, on the Lyttel-ton-Wellington run, would not be able to cope with Tasman trans-shipments. The Australian exporter would again be unable tn supply the South Island as he could the north. Mr Wallace suggested that the Canterbury chamber write to the Sydney and Melbourne Chambers of Commerce, asking them if they were concerned that the South Island was not getting direct service with roll-on. roll-off shipping and. if so. for them to approach the Union Steam Ship Company in Melbourne and Sydney. This suggestion was agreed to.
