ARTS IN CHCH
Committee Proposed
The chairman of the Pan Pacific Arts Festival Committee (Mr H. G. Hay) has suggested the formation of a cultural affairs committee of the Christchurch City Council.
Its function would be to co-ordinate the activities of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, the Town Hall and Civic Theatre, libraries, community centres, involvement in future festivals, financial assistance to musical and other cultural organisations, and any other issues concerning the arts in Christchurch.
Mr Hay suggested this at the annual general meeting of the festival committee last night. The proposed committee could co-opt people from cultural organisations outside Christchurch, he said. “The day might come when the Queen Elizabeth Arts Council would make a grant to the committee to allocate to local cultural organisations such as our choirs.” he said. “The City Council might also allocate a sum—certainly not sloo,o9o—to the committee to have available for cultural organisations which proved they were deserving of financial support at the expense of the ratepayers. “I would hope that the future activities of this festival organisation would justify a reasonably generous grant,” he said.
