Hearing Tests
Sir,—From the number of people who availed themselves of the hearing tests carried out last week by the Hard of Hearing League at a Christchurch store, it would appear that the public realise the importance of these tests. Many, through various circumstances, were unable to avail themselves of the opportunity to have their hearing tested. Would it be possible for the Hard of Hearing League to continue these tests at their rooms? Or perhaps the Department of Healt'- could do them at their offices. A scheme similar to that of the chest X-ray service, where it is possible to attend without an appointment, is envisaged. In view of the number of people found last week to be suffering from some degree of hearing loss, it would appear that any tests which can detect deafness in the early stage are most valuable.—Yours, etc., G.N.S. September 23, 1968. (Dr L. F. Jepson, District Medical Officer of Health in Christchurch, replies: “This week was run as a special project The Hard of Hearing League cannot undertake routine screening tests and the department’s staff are fully engaged in the screening of school children and in occupational work associated with noisy industrial processes. As in general illhealth, referral takes place through the family doctor to the hearing clinic at the Christchurch Hospital.”]
