New President of Federation
The new president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, Dr H. C. Holland, of Auckland, is the immediate past president of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association. Dr Holland, who was born in Canterbury, has
had a successful career in industry, and has served in community, scientific, and educational spheres. Dr Holland was born at Harewood, and was educated at Christchurch Boys’ High School and the University of Canterbury. He graduated in science, and studied econo-
mics under Professor J. B. Condliffe. He was also chosen to study physics under Lord Rutherford when the latter visited New Zealand.
Dr Holland took up a fellowship in England which enabled him to graduate as doctor of philosophy from Leeds University. He then returned to Christchurch, where he served two terms on the Heathcote County Council and also held a seat on the Canterbury University Council.
As a specialist in the tanning industry, Dr Holland moved to Auckland in 1945 to became general manager of W. Sutherland and Company, Ltd. He is now managing director and deputy-chairman of the company. He was president of the New Zealand Tanners’ Federation for several years in the 19505. When the University Grants Committee was established in 1961, Dr Holland was invited to become a member. Last year, he was president of the Auckland Museum in its centenary year, and in 1965 was chairman of the New Zealand Science Congress.
Dr Holland has been a vice-president of the Manufacturers' Federation for the last two years, and for many years has been a member of the council of the Auckland 'Manufacturers’ Association.
