Mr P. H. W. Brown
Mr Philip Harper Whitefoord Brown, a cofounder and governing director of the Christchurch firm, Brown Bros Engineering, Ltd, died recently after a long illness. He was 85. Mr Brown was bom in Waimate, and, after attending Warwick House preparatory school and Christ’s College, formed in 1908, with his brother, the late Mr A. E Brown, the partnership subsequently incorporated as Brown Bros Engineering, Ltd The firm developed from general electrical work to the manufacture of power-driven pumping machinery for which it became known throughout New Zealand. In 1960, Mr Brown established a charitable fund known as the Philip Brown Fund and although emphasis is placed on the work of the Church of England other charities have benefited, including the St John Ambulance Association, homes for the aged, and the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association—Nurse Maude having been a cousin of Mr Brown. < Mr Brown, who did not : marry, is survived by his eld- i est brother, Mr G.
