Schools’ Plea (K.Z. Frets Asiociation) WELLINGTON, Sept 17. An inter-denominational schools’ committee, representing New Zealand’s private schools, has made submissions to the Government for a grant totalling approximately s3m a year. This was revealed in Parliament today by Mr D. J. Riddiford (Nat, Wellington Central) during debate on the Education Department estimates. Mr Riddiford said that the National Government had done a certain amount for private schools in supplying “incidentals,” this amounted to less than slm a year. “This is something paltry compared with the education vote of $37,854,000,” he said. Mr Riddiford said the committee was seeking a capital grant each year of $6O for every secondary school pupil in a private school and $3O for every primary school pupil. He said the total grant would amount to less than s3m a year. “All the denominations have buried their sectarian differences and come forward to present their requests to the Government “They have asked for a very modest amount," said Mr Riddiford.
