POLICE SHIFT
Chief Inspector W. R. Fleming, transferred from Auckland, began duties at the Christchurch Central police station yesterday. Chief Inspector Fleming is serving in the South Island for the first time since he joined the New Zealand Police in 1948. Chief Inspector Fleming’s father was in the police, retiring with the rank of senior-sergeant. A few years ago, Chief Inspector Fleming, his father, his sister, and younger brother were all in the police. His sister has resigned, but his brother is still in the service. Now aged 47, Chief Inspector Fleming was the youngest sergeant in the police when he was promoted to that rank. He was a sergeant instructor at the Police Training School (Trentham) from 1956 to 1959. Chief Inspector Fleming was transferred to Auckland in 1960 and has served in Auckland since, apart from two years in Hamilton. He was promoted to inspector in 1963, and to chief inspector in 1965.
