No Tennis Entry
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 17. If the Rhodesian Davis Cup tennis player, A. Irvine, attempts to enter New Zealand on a Rhodesian passport he will be refused entry. A spokesman for the Department of External Affairs said today that this was mandatory. “Of course, he may have a British, or some other passport. That would be different” Irvine has been invited by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association to tour New Zealand to compete in tournaments, including the New Zealand championships between December 14 and January 21.
New Zealand’s position on persons carrying Rhodesian passports is governed by the application of sanctions against Rhodesia by the United Nations and is similar to that of Britain, which has already turned Rhodesians away. The Rhodesian-born test cricketer, C. Bland, was sent back to South Africa on August 19 after he had tried to enter Britain to play for the Rest of the World XI. External Affairs officials say that New Zealand, in supporting United Nations sanctions, automatically refuses entry to anyone carrying a Rhodesian passport.
