Marines Hit In Vietnam
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAIGON, Sept. 17. North Vietnamese troops shelled a United States Marine unit just south of the Demilitarised Zone yesterday, killing 25 and wounding 126. The North Vietnamese fired more than 200 mortar shells into the marines’ position near the “Rock Pile” battleground. Helicopter gunships and artillery were not able to break the barrage for about five hours. The “Rock Pile” is a large rock mass over which American marines and North Vietnamese troops fought late in 1966. American and South Vietnamese troops yesterday found hundreds of crates of ammunition which had been hauled into South Vietnam from Cambodia by North Vietnamese infantrymen using bicycles over jungle supply trails.
The allied forces, combing through an area 60 miles north of Saigon and 10 miles south of the Cambodian border, found enough ammunition to equip a North Vietnamese division of 6000 to 7000 men for several days.
