Traffic Jam

Sir,—A collision occurred on Saturday after 10 p.m. between a bus and car hard up against the kerb in the Square. A tow-truck was hooked up to the car and could have towed it clear within a few minutes; but for 20 minutes the whole Square was so filled choc-a-bloc with traffic that no vehicle could move in any direction. Accident locations have to be chalked on the road, and statements taken. I am open to correction, but even allowing for this need, I maintain a London bobby would have had the traffic moving in five minutes. —Yours, etc., SETH NEWELL. September 8, 1968. [The traffic superintendent for the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: “As the correspondent’s letter is dated September 8 it would appear the incident referred to took place on Saturday, September 7. There is no record of an accident between a bus and a car in Cathedral Square

on this date and this is confirmed by the Transport Board and the traffic officers on duty at this time.”]
