Two-Speed Post

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Sept 16. A widely-criticised twospeed postal service was launched in Britain today despite boycott threats from business organisations. The Post Office introduced a “first-class” mail service increasing by Id to 5d letters fo ■ next-day delivery. The standard inland letter rate of 4d remains, but downgraded in status to slower “second-class” mail, ranking with printed paners. The Post Office said the new system was needed to avoid losses, but critics have called it a virtual surcharge on prompt delivery which had been presented to the public as a “choice."

Under the banner, “Make a Ghost of the Fivenenny Post," some firms and chambers of commerce have threatened to shun the proposed revenueproducing first-class mail.
