Noted Soloists
The English Chamber Orchestra, which is to visit New Zealand for a week in April during a world tour under the young conductor and pianist, Daniel Barenboim, contains some of Britain’s best-known soloists. These include its leader, Emmanuel Hurwitz, and viola player, Cecil Aronwitz, the cellist, Keith Harvey, and the flautist, Richard Adeney. The orchestra is to give concerts in Christchurch, Wellington, Napier and Auckland.
The programmes will include works by composers ranging from Bach and Mozart
to Schoenberg and Hindemith, and a new work for piano and orchestra being written for the tour by the British composer, Alexander Goehr. The orchestra was founded in 1948 by the late Arnold Goldsbrough, and bore his name for some years. It is a unique combination of experienced musicians, many of whom are well known as soloists. Their ensemble playing has been acclaimed both throughout Britain and on many successful tours. One of the most notable—in 1966 covered the Near East, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France. Germany, Greece, Italy, Scandinavia and Switzerland.
