Boat Owner Pays Cost Of Rescue

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 16. A Wellington man today paid more than $6O to the Wellington Harbour Board to recover his dinghy, which was impounded yesterday.

The man, Mr John Condon, of Breaker Bay, was rescued by the board’s pilot launch Tiakina last night after he had drifted outside the harbour in the dinghy for almost three hours. The dinghy’s small outboard motor broke down while Mr Condon was testing the craft off Baring Head. Mr Condon had no lifejacket, no emergency equipment, no torch, no matches, and no bailer, according to board officials. “If a person doesn’t take reasonable precautions at sea and has to be rescued be-

cause of it he will have to pay,” Mr R. R. Reeves, the board’s general manager, said tonight. An account for Mr Condon “in excess of $6O” was worked out and later paid. The dinghy was then returned to its owner. In addition to the Tiakina, the police launch Lady Elizabeth took part in th' search for Mr Condon.
