Cannibalism ‘Healthy’

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 16. The discontinuance of cannibalism had probably contributed to the serious decline in Maori health during the nineteenth century, an Auckland doctor said tonight. “While we cannot condone cannibalism, it must be appreciated that human flesh did contain certain proteins necessary to health,” said Dr L. Gluckman.

This source of protein largely disappeared from the Maori’s diet after the European settlement of New Zealand.

Dr Glnckman, a psychiatrist, was addressing a meeting of the Auckland Institute on the adverse effect on Maori health of various European influences.
