Design Award Success
A former winner of the annual schoolgirls’ dressmaking competition in Christchurch has won a merit award in the 1968 Benson and Hedges Award for Design. She is Miss Diedre Burrow, who was the only South Island designer to be named for an award at the finals in Wellington on Thursday evening. Miss Burrow, aged 18, won a merit award in the day wear section. Two years ago when she was a pupil of St Mary’s College in Christchurch she won first prize in the D.I.C. sewing contest for schoolgirls. Although Miss Burrow had not returned to Christchurch yesterday, her mother, Mrs W. Burrow, who is also a dressmakes, was able to describe the award-winning garment
She said it was a cream, twopiece suit, suitable for high fashion day wear. The long jacket was cut on the cardigan line and it was belted on the hips with a belt which fastened with a tortoise shell buckle. The skirt had box pleats and the outfit had a look of the 1930 s about it. Miss Burrow, who works in a local boutique, has been interested in sewing and designing ever since she made ; clothes for her dolls, said her mother.
