Knitting In The House

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept 12. Parliamentary debate was conducted last night to the accompaniment of a percussion section of clicking knitting needles. Six women knitters—a record for the public galleries in the chamber of the House of Representatives—sat in a close-knit group surrounded by balls of wool and knitting patterns. Their clicking “symphony” was led by Mrs V. F. Cracknell, wife of the Social Credit leader and member for Hobson. Since her husband was elected to Parliament, Mrs Cracknell has spent countless evenings in the public gallery distening to debate and knitting, but she has seldom had more than one or two knitting accompanists.

Small Fire.—A fire in the basement of the Christchurch railway station caused dense smoke last evening. Firemen, called at 9.37 p.m. found sacks smouldering.
