Obituary
MR L. BUTCHER Mr L. S. P. Butcher, secretary of the Canterbury Education Board from 1949 1o 1955, died in New Plymouth this week. He was 73. Mr Butcher held office in Canterbury during the board's post-war boom in school building, the introduction of various intensive-training schemes to relieve teacher shortages and the start of the new scheme for appointment and promotion of teachers. Before coming to Christchurch. Mr Butcher was district. administration officer for the Education Department in Auckland from the time that branch office was established Previously, he served for 20 years in Wellington as controlling officer of the teachers’ salaries and staffing section of the Education Department. Mr Butcher began his employment in the department in 1912, and was thus engaged in education for 43 years, including service in the First World War. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. Rev. T. Campbell A former superintendent of the Christchurch Presbyterian Social Service Association and clerk of the Christchurch Presbytery, the Rev. T. G. Campbell, died in Christchurch on Thursday. In his youth, Mr Campbell left his home in Riversdale, Southland, to go to sea. After working in the Broken Hill mines in Australia, he returned to New Zealand and entered the University of Otago in 1923. Later, he attended the Presbyterian Theological Hall.
He was ordained a mini® ter in 1930, and served at Nightcaps, Waikaka. Kaikorai Valley, Greymouth and Ashburton South. In 1953, he was appointed superintendent of the Presbyterian Social Service Association, and in 1954 clerk of the presbytery. He resigned as a minister in April, 1966. Mr Campbell took a leading part in a number of welfare organisations, and was a member of the Christchurch Rotary Club. He was a chaplain at Paparua Prison, and chaplain to forces in the Middle East, and in a hospital ship in World War 11. Mr Campbell is survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters.
