CHEVALIER HONOURED

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, Sept 12. The bright lights of the Paris music halls beckoned a IQ-year-old boy to the stage 70 years ago, when he was an apprentice engraver. He began as an acrobat—and failed. Today, Maurice Chevalier celebrated his eightieth birthday with a series of parties given in his honour as one of the world’s greatest film, television and stage personalities. About 250 international guests wore straw hats in the familiar Chevalier style at the Lido night club tonight and sang with him such of his famous songs as “Louise,” “Mimi,” and “Thank Heaven For Little Girls.” Maurice Chevalier says he will retire, from the . stage within the next year but will continue to work in television and films.
