AUCKLAND BUILDING

Mayor Defends His Record (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 13. The Mayor of Auckland (Dr R. G. McElroy), today said it was untrue that Auckland had been lagging in its urban redevelopment schemes, as had been alleged by the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae). Answering earlier criticism from the Mayor, Mr Rae said yesterday Auckland was only now completing the Philips Street redevelopment scheme Which began 10 years ago. “Had more schemes been promoted, more approvals would have been given,” Mr Rae said.

Dr McElroy said today: “1 have been building vigorously from the day I became Mayor.” Six new blocks in Freemans Bay had gone ahead. Three were completed and three more would be ready by Christmas.
