CONSENT TO SURGERY

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, Sept. 13.

Professor Christiaan Barnard today defended the right of transplant surgeons to withhold the names of organ donors, and said the publicity surrounding heart transplants was having an inhibiting effect on the families of potential donors. “We know of actual cases where a suitable donor has been available, but where relatives have withheld their consent to the removal of the heart for fear of the publicity to which they and their families would be subjected,” Professor Barnard said. “The reason for withholding the names is not that we have anything to hide," he said. “This decision is in line with the unanimous agreement reached at a recent heart transplant symposium in Cape Town, and in line with the feelings of all doctors with whom I have discussed the matter.”
