VOLLEYBALL

University’s Best Play

University Girls played their best game for several weeks to beat Fire Brigade, 10-15, 15-9, 15-9, 15-9, 15-10, in the volleyball competition last evening. Univesity’s advantage lay in stronger serving and cleaner handling, and the cohesion gained under the leadership of R. Jones. D. Tocker and A. Cardwell set up well, and S. Taylor was prominent with long runs of reliable serving.

Fire Brigade did not attack as strongly as usual and its defensive play was not strong enough to make a serious challenge. Training College men had little difficulty defeating Training College Girls, 15-6, 15-5, 15-10. Improved set play by the men’s team was not matched by adequate blocking by the girls. G. Hillyard spiked well, but with stronger opposition would have to vary his style of play more. Court coverage was not always adequate. For the girls’ team, T. Askew and B. Blackie played an excellent defensive game, but the team lost too many opportunities from unreliable serving.

Deep Freeze was not strongly challenged by a weakened Y.M.C.A. team, and won their match, 15-11, 15-4, 15-6. Both teams, but especially Y.M.C.A., were hampered by the use of too many underhand shots, which lacked sufficient control.

Deep Freeze attacked strongly throughout, and Y.M.C.A. often had trouble handling the faster balls. Several Deep Freeze players are developing well as smashes, but still lack control in setting up the ball. For Y.M.C.A., A. Holt played intelligently, often winning Fioints from balls placed deep n the court. J. Jones and D. Harliwich were also prominent, especially in retrieving loose balls.

Points to date: Y.M.C.A. 13, Training College 12. Deep Freeze 10, University D 8. University Girls 7, Old Maroons 5, Fire Brigade 5, University C 3, Training College Girls 1.
