Hoon Hay Champion Again

The “young power” tn Canterbury table tennis, Hoon Hay. retained its A grade inter-dub title when it beat its strongest rival, Avonslde I, during the sixteenth round of matches last evening.

With two rounds to play. Hoon Hay cannot be headed. Avonside I will have to win Its last two fixtures and Hoon Hay lose twice tor the title to be shared. Hoon Hay will have tough assignments against Selwyn I and Riccarton in the next two rounds but it should wtn at least once. j. J. Weir clinched victory for Hoon Hay When he beat Ling Nan Ming. 13-21, 21-17, 23-21. Before this match Hoon Hay led 8-4 but Weir was not expected to win. Had he lost, all would have depended on the last doubles match . Ling Nan Ming was well below his best. Earlier G. R. Saunders had beaten him, 13-21, 21-17. 23-21. A very relaxed V, N. Brightwell (Selwyn I) had his first Inter-clUb victory for several seasons over Canterbury’s No. 1, J. Armstrong (Riccarton). He won 21-18 16-21, 21-11 Linwood II reversed the decision of earlier in the season when it beat Linwood I, 15 games to 14. Linwood I led 5-3 but Linwood II was able to win three of the last four matches. An occasional A grade player, P. J.
