GOVT RAISES N.R.B. GRANT

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 10.

The Government had decided to boost its contribution to the National Roads Fund for this financial year by slm to s3m, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) announced today. But the final total would still be below last year’s figure of $3.25m.

Mr Allen said that in both years the contribution had been made to cushion the effects of the revenue lost to the fund by diversion of registration and licence fees and in recognition of the fact that when the normal increase in petrol sales did not occur, the National Roads Board had had difficulties in planning its works programme. Most of the additional slm will probably be spent on urgent State highway works, which would help employment in the contracting industry. Applications from district roads councils for supplementary works will be considered

at the board’s half-yearly review of its programme and detailed allocation will be made then.
