Combined Show

Exhibition of pottery and weaving by Yvonne Rust and Hank Mol; Several Arts, 809 Colombo Street, until September 13. Pottery and weaving enhance one another, and when they are nicely displayed in a modest but tastefully appointed gallery the result is a satisfying and rewarding exhibition. Yvonne Rust’s homely “cottage-pie” pottery, wholesome and generous to a fault, contrasts with the very restrained, almost austere textiles of Hank Mol.

If the pots seem almost to fall over each other with exuberance, the black, grey and creamy “De Stijl Group” textiles remain cool and aloof. This reference to the work of Mondrian is quite deliberate and intended to be helpful. For once the best exhibit is also the most expensive, and this is as it should be, the large Wall Hanging (18) with central motif reminiscent of an international airlines bird symbol is a really fine work; sparingly and tightly constructed, exactly right in scale, superb in craftsmanship. I wish the same could always be said of some of the aggregations of bowls and platters into terrace or garden lights. But for my taste they lean too heavily on “spare parts” sculpture to be comfortable.

A well printed and helpful catalogue with biographical notes on both artists is available and rounds off a very enjoyable exhibition.
