STUDENT ISSUE

Controversy “Closed”

The contraceptives controversy at the University of Canterbury is considered closed by the Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips).

The Students’ Association decision on Monday night against the installation of con-traceptive-vending machines was, he thought, the end of the matter.

Asked about the midnight motion, when only about 100 students remained out of 500 at the meeting, that contraceptives “be readily available to students”—and the suggestion that they be sold in the Students’ Union shop—Professor Phillips said he did not think these would receive serious attention.

The vending-machine issue was on the agenda for the Student Liaison Committee’s meeting this week, but he did not think it would now be discussed, Professor Phillips said.
