Olympic hope

Debbie Meyer, a slim, 16-year-old girl from Sacramento, California, has proved in recent weeks that she is the finest female swimmer in the world and an obvious favourite for several gold medals at the Olympic Games next month. In the last six weeks Miss Meyer has broken eight world freestyle records—the 800 metres mark four times, the 400 metres twice, and the 200 metres and 1500 metres once each. She also holds the world 880 yd record. Miss Meyer gave a taste of things to come at the

“Little Olympics” in Mexico City last year when she won three gold medals, in the 200, 400 and 800 metres freestyle events. She confirmed her superiority with a similar clean sweep at the United States championships last month.
