ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT Duo Returning Soon

Baron and Baroness Frederick van Pallandt, better known as Nina and Frederick, who made a highly successful tour of New Zealand almost three years ago, are to return next month. They will start in Auckland on October 11 a tour which will take them to 11 centres in three weeks. Five South Island centres are on their itinerary: Nelson on October 23; Tirnaru October 24: Christchurch October 25, 26 and 28; Dunedin October 30; and Invercargill October 31.

Wherever they have been on their travels (their latest tour, just completed, was through Europe and Britain), Nina and Frederick have drawn big audiences and enthusiastic reviews. All of which is the more surprising because they came together as a singing act more or less fortuitously. Their publicity agents are able to claim, with some justification, that Nina and Frederick have been singing together since they were four years old. That was in 1938, and Frederick’s father was then the Dutch Ambassador to Denmark. However, the Ambassador was transferred soon after-

wards, and between the beginning of the war and 1957 the couple met only once—in Uruguay. In 1957 Frederick returned to Denmark from Trinidad where he had studied tropical agriculture at Trinidad University, and had, as a side line, become interested in calypso and started his own calypso band. Nina and Frederick sang together at Nina’s home, and decided to audition for a con tract with a leading cabarei in Copenhagen, Mon Coeur They got the job, and soon they had television and radio contracts, recordings, and offers of tours as well. They sang for the Danish Royal Family at a birthday party for Princess Margrethe in 1958, made two films in Den mark and in the last 10 year? have toured throughou’ Europe, North America, the Far East, Australia, and New Zealand. Nina and Frederick now make their home in Geneva where they have a flat; ant’ they also have a house on an island off the southern coast of Spain. They have three children, aged six, five, and two.
