Casper had rounds of 68, 65, 67, 66 to finish three strokes ahead of B. Crampton (Australia). The $20,000 first place prize in Casper’s fifth tournament victory this year increased his lead over J. Nicklaus in the professional golf money-win-ning race. Casper has won $171,436. Nicklaus, who spent the last week on a fishing holiday, has won $151,302. Crampton led the first two rounds, 65 and 67, but slumped to 70 on Saturday and Casper swept to the lead. Crampton moved within three strokes of the lead on Sunday when he sank an iron shot from about 150 yards away for an eagle 2 on the

424-yard eleventh hole, but at the same time Casper continued to score birdies to maintain his lead. R. Floyd took third place with 271, and D. Stockton was fourth with 274. Casper won the Greater Hartford Open in 1963 and 1965. The 18-under-par winning score tied the tournament record of 266 established by A. Wall, jun., in 1966.
