LITIGATION IN CEYLON
‘Too Expensive For The Poor’ (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) COLOMBO, Sept. 9. Litigation in Ceylon has become far too expensive for the poor man to obtain justice, according to acting Minister of Justice (Mr M. Tiruchelvam Q.C.). Mr Tiruchelvam, who Is also Minister of Local Government, was addressing the opening session of a four-day international seminar on the role of the legal profession in Asia. Speaking as an advocate and not as a member of the Ceylonese Government, Mr Tiruchelvam said the legal profession in Ceylon had isolated itself from the people. It used a foreign language (English) and its ideals were foreign. The poor man who came to court from the villages was often bewildered by the language used, the manner and conduct of the courts, and the amount of money he had to pay, he said.
