’Quakes In New Guinea

‘ (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PORT MORESBY, Sept. 9 Most of the Sepik region of New Guinea was shaken by a series of earthquakes early today, but only slight damage was reported. The East Sepik District Commissioner (Mr Edward Hicks) estimated the tremors at force six pn the modified Mercalli scale. The tremors rumbled over the mountainous area between midnight and dawn, the worst hit centre being Maprik, where four small builHings were destroyed. In Wewak, the district headquarters, bottles and glassware in two shops were broken, and in Hayfield where the shocks were said to have been the heaviest for 20 years, water tanks were damaged.
