MAGISTRATE’S COURT Youth On Eight Charges Sent To Detention Centre
Kevin Warren McFarlane, aged 17, a general hand, was sent for training at a detention centre when he appeared before Mr W. F. Brown, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for sentence on eight charges. McFarlane had admitted three charges of driving while disqualified, two of obstructing a traffic officer, one of theft of a radio valued at $9, the property of lan Archer, one of unlawfully taking a station waggon valued at $lOOO, also the property of lan Archer, and one of driving at a speed which might have been dangerous. Mr R. F. B. Perry, who appeared for the accused, said that McFarlane had a record which was far from good. His father had deserted his mother when he was only five years old. McFarlane still had the support and help of his mother. The offences were the result of one escapade and it was possible that McFarlane was under the influence of others, said Mr Perry. “You have had an unfortunate home life but you have had the benefit of considerable assistance from your mother, the Child Welfare Division and the Probation Service,” the Magistrate said. “You failed to keep appointments with the probation officer and this indicates a defiance of authority. You have not responded to probation. If you appear again on a criminal charge you will be sent to Borstal ”

Benseman), of failing to give *ay to the right at the intersection of Dawsons and Maddiaons Road*, Templeton, on May 16. was dismissed. Heskey pleaded not guilty.
