Amateur Riding Success "The Press" Special Service INVERCARGILL. J. G. P. Kelly, of Gore, will attempt to extend an outstanding record as an amateur horseman, in the B. S. Irwin Memorial Steeplechase at the Otago Hunt Club’s annual meeting at Wmgatui on Saturday. Kelly will be trying for bls seventh successive win in the race. He has been engaged for Peter on Saturday. This combination was successful in the W. S. Wayte Memorial Steeplechase at Gore last Saturday. Kelly began bis winning sequence in the Irwin Memorial on Callamara in 1962. His subsequent winners have been Tom Dooley, Beirut (twice). Faraj, and Doomsday. Tom Dooley, Beirut and Doomsday were all owned and trained by Kelly. Kelly was also successful on Beirut in the Duke of Gloucester Cup Steeplechase last year. Peter is trained at Gore by E A. Winsloe, who also saddled Callamara and Faraj to win the Irwin Steeplechase in 1962 and 1966 respectively. Ben Lomond In Work **The frees’* Special Service CAMBRIDGE. Ben Lomond, the top New Zealand three-year-old last season, is likely to make his first public appearance of the new season at the Waikato Racing Club’s trial meeting at Te Rapa on September 24 provided the track is not heavy. Ben Lomond has been back In work for a few weeks with J- w. Winder and is making good progress. “I have been looking to start running him along but just as the tracks have started to improve rain has come and they have turned heavy again,” said Winder.
So far Ben Lomond has been restricted to pacework tasks but on Tuesday he was allowed to stride over three furlongs under a good hold in 41}sec, and did this well.
