New Meat Packing

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. The Meat Board is close to introducing a new method of packaging its mutton carcases to Japan that will permit refrigerated vessels to carry up to 50 per cent more meat in one shipment. The general manager of the board (Mr G. Anderson) has described a style of packing in which cuts are made across the belly of the carcase, and it is then bent double with the rear feet tucked under the shoulder pits. Only authority from Japan to use the new method was awaited by the board. Mr Anderson told the Transport Commission which is reviewing the South Island meat export trade. The method allowed three carcases to be fitted into shipping space previously occupied by only two, he said.
