$3OO IN WEEK
Appeal To Public (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. R. V. Johnson, the New Zealand hurdler, may not be able to compete in the Olympic Games unless $3OO is raised —within a week. Johnson was selected fn Category B under which the association in his district, Otago, had to find the finance necessary. z Given until August 31 to achieve the qualifying time, Johnson managed to do this at California on the last day. His dramatic eleventh-hour bid was received with mixed feelings by the Otago Athletic Centre, which has until the end of this week to collect the $3OO. A special meeting of the centre decided to call on the public for support. "We hoped to avoid a public appeal,” Mr L. F. Gerrie, president of the centre, said, “but the situation is rather desperate.” Mrs-L. T. Bradshaw, a vicepresident, said that the centre had already raised $9OO for Mrs S. Potts. The amount required for Mrs Potts was exceeded by $77 and a further $3OO was needed for Johnson.
