Floods In E. Russia
(N.Z P,4.-Reuter —Copyright) MOSCOW, September 4. Severe floods are afflicting the Soviet far eastern seaboard round the big ports of Vladivostok and Nakhodka, the Communist Party newspaper, “Pravda” reported today. It said rivers had burst their banks after two weeks of torrential rain which started when typhoon "Polly” moved across from Japan. Crops have been washed away, telephone lines cut, and houses in low-lying areas flooded out Soldiers and sailors have been called out to help in rescue work, using helicopters and amphibious vehicles in places, the report added. It made no mention of loss of human or animal life but said a special commission had been set up to deal with the disaster.
