Flights Disrupted

Heavy ground fog: at Auckland Airport disrupted the : National Airways Corporation’s time-table yesterday. Nine aircraft were held at Auckland until 10.30 a.m. and two flights to Christchurch were cancelled. Lighter passenger loads after the school holidays enabled N.A.C. to adjust its schedules, but all flights ran late for the rest of the day. Whenuapai was used as an alternative to Auckland all morning for incoming flights. New Lights Traffic lights at the intersection of Straven Road, Idris Road and Fendalton Road are expected to be working this morning. Waimairi County Council engineers hope to switch them on after the morning traffic peak, which ends about 9.30 a.m. Fewer Unemployed The number of unemployed in the Christchurch district fell by 119 to 816 in the fortnight ended August 30, said the district superintendent of the Department of Labour (Mr A. B. Tuck) yesterday. They included two schoolleavers. The major categories of unemployed were labourers (253), factory workers (91), tradesmen (63), and seasonal workers (87). During the month work was found for 178 men and 105 women. Vacancies on August 30 numbered 89. The total on Government and other special works was 278.

Road-Plans Display

Models of sections of the northern motorway, the expressway across the northeastern corner of Hagley Park, the proposed lay-out for Cathedral Square, and of the Kilmore and Madras Streets bridges will be included in a special display which will be on view at the Exhibition Centre, High Street, for an indefinite period from today. Also on view will be maps and diagrams explaining the Regional Planning Authority proposals, just adopted, for the city’s master traffic plan. Churches’ Assembly

New Zealand may be the first country to publish a popular report of the Assembly of the World Council of Churches at Uppsala, Sweden. It is due to be released tomorrow. After the previous assembly at New Delhi, New Zealand was first in publishing a report, that written by the Rev. A. A. Brash, the general secretary of National Council of Churches at the time. The present report has been, written by the Rev. D. M. Taylor, Mr Brash’s successor. Published by the Presbyterian Bookroom, the report, “Uppsala, 1968,” has 56 pages of text and eight photographs. It will sell for 60c and one order for 800 copies has already been received from Melbourne.

A four-roomed holiday cottage, with a garage, on a 37perch section which has a road frontage of more than four chains at Charteris Bay was sold at auction yesterday for $7OOO.
