CHURCH UNION

Four Talks In Series

Church union will be discussed by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) and ministers from the Anglican, Presbyterian, and Methodist Churches at a series of four evening services at St Augustine’s Anglican Church, Cashmere Hills, on September 15, 22 and 29, and October 13. Each speaker will discuss church union negotiations, including questions on the prospects for union, changes in services reactions from other churches and what a united church of New Zealand would be like, from the point of view of his own church.

The minister of St Augustine's (Canon R. P. Andrews) said that the first part of the service would be held in the church, but for the discussion the congregation would move to the parish hall. The first address will be given by Archdeacon R. O. Williams, vicar of Papanui, and on September 22, the Rev. D. Glenny, minister of St Stephen's Presbyterian Church, will present the Presbyterian point of view. The Rev. W. S. Dawson, minister of the Durham Street Methodist Church, will speak on September 29, and the last talk will be given by Bishop Ashby.
