Congress In Edinburgh
Dr J. H. Andreae, second professor of electrical engineering at the University of Canterbury, returned yesterday from the Edinburgh congress of the International Federation for Information Processing impressed with new aspects of computers and their applications. “I must admit that there was much talk of sophisticated new systems by their inventors and counter-talk by others who said they had not yet been tested. But the congress and two weeks in a communications firm north of London showed me there is plenty of life left in Britain,” said Professor Andreae. Professor Andreae also visited Australian universities. He said their strength was evident The serious imbalance between Australian university and other salaries, compared with New Zealand, threatened the stability and growth of industries and universities in this country. “Nevertheless,” said Professor Andreae, “there are many things which New Zealand has to offer which should not be forgotten by those who scan neighbouring green pastures. New Zealand has no problem which cannot be solved quickly by hard work,' good sense, and good will.”
