(N.Z. Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, Sept 1. A trainee escaped from the Invercargill Borstal tonight, taking advantage of the institution’s chapel where he had been worshipping. Michael Rerekura, aged 19, who had been at the Borstal only since May, was among a group at the Sunday night chapel service taken by two clergymen.
Everyone went to a hall at the end of the service, but Rerekura apparently slipped back to the chapel.
He had bare feet and was clad only in blue trousers, shorts, jersey, and black leather leisure jacket.
An alert was given within minutes of the other trainees entering the halL One of the chapel window fastenings was found broken.
